Fall Winter Fashion Trends 2016-17

As you can see from the outfits above, the main theme from the Couture runway shows for this fall/winter fashion season is maximalism! 'More is more!' as all the main fashion reports are saying.

The outfits above (from left to right) illustrate:

  • Applique -- 3D flowers in the first outfit, re-cycled fabric and beading in the second
  • Embellished denim
  • Busy, graphic prints
  • More applique -- this time feathers
  • Golden lace
  • Micro pleating
  • Empire waist lines and high necked styles
  • 40s-inspired suiting (more embellishements here with embroidery flowers on the jacket)
  • Statement earrings (you can't really see in the last image, but the earrings are oversized hoops)

So, what am I seeing in the stores so far this fall?

  • Rich-looking fabrics such as velvet, brocade, textured fabrics, patterns inspired by interiors (think sofa and curtain fabrics), especially florals and nature-inspired prints
  • Texture such as: faux fur; shearling; brocade and jacard; embroidery; tweed; applique; sequins and other embellishments
  • The off-the-shoulder
  • Volume, both in lengths (knee length and longer for bottoms) and/or width
  • Old-fashioned and/or ethereal very feminine styles, such as those inspired by Victoriana: high necklines; sheers fabrics (though used modestly on arms or panels within a garment); ruffles (including peplums)
  • Full sleeves (part of the volume trend), especially bell sleeves and larger cuffs
  • Over-sized earrings
  • Military-inspired jackets and coats, especially peacoat variations
  • Checks, including tartan/plaid
  • Colors include: berry tones; navy and other blues; khakis; black

You'll find velvet everywhere, in clothing items (pants, skirts, tops, dresses, jackets, coats) shoes and accessories.

Other rich fabrics

Rich looking interior-inspired prints and fabrics such bold florals, nature-inspired prints, jacquard, and brocade. There's also a lot of lace around still.

Embellishments and texture

As well as sewn-on embellishments, such as those above, you'll find textured fabrics such as tweed and textured knits.

Coats & jackets

Many of the jackets and coats this fall/winter fashion season reflect the texture trend, and also a trend for check fabrics. There's a wide variety of styles, in particular: military inspired styles (especially peacoat styles as shown in the Banana Republic image above); faux fur (including leopard print); and motor bike-inspired jackets (in leather, wool and other fabrics).
