Jane's Jottings

Well 2020 is now well under way. I'd intended getting this newsletter out at the end of January, but well...here it is now!

Anyway Happy New Year! 2020! It has a ring about it. A pleasing symmetry. Connotations of perfect vision. Wouldn't it be nice if we could apply that to our environment and fellow humans in a harmonious and beneficial way?

It's been a strange summer here in NSW and Australia. Even if you don't live here you'll have heard about the terrible bush fires fueled by drought, high temperatures and strong winds. Here in Avalon Beach we've been affected with poor air quality, over-cast skies, red sunsets and helpless feelings of Armageddon. I can only begin to imagine how those who lost loved ones and property are coping!

In the last few weeks we've been getting some rain, which is very welcome, and now too much rain and flooding. It never rains, but it pours!

My word for the year (in place of a resolution) is 'fit'. Fit and healthy. Fit for the environment. Fit for life. I'd like to adopt new exercise routines. My diet has become more wholefood, plant based (vegan) and I'd like to work out new healthy and tasty meal options. And I'd like to learn how to make more environmentally (and ethically) sustainable fashion and lifestyle choices.

How about you? What have you resolved to do this year?

My renovations are slowly continuing after stopping over Christmas and New Year. I'm finding the new kitchen process very trying, but at least we now have a functioning kitchen and the splash backs are due to be installed next week. Then hopefully my builder will be back and have things finished up in a few weeks (fingers crossed). When it's all done and dusted we'll love the changes!

On a fashion note: when was the last time you wore a belt? Perhaps you already have a belt or two that you haven't worn for a while? In this month's article I give you ideas for wearing a belt (see below).

How to Wear a Belt & Look Good When You're Over 40

Belts are back in fashion! Have you noticed?

The current popularity of belts goes with the, now main stream, trend for more volume in clothing (in both width and length) and the return of the full-tuck. The addition of a belt to an outfit helps control the volume and provides a finishing touch. And if you have tucked-in your top, and your pants or skirt has belt hoops your outfit will look incomplete if you don't add a belt.

A belt is often a focal point in an outfit. It draws attention to the waist and emphasizes how shapely (or otherwise) that area is.

Yet many of us don't like our tummy area. So, what to do when belts are back in fashion, as they are now?

Luckily it is possible to wear a belt and create the illusion of a defined waist, even if your middle isn't your best feature.
